FAQ

How long is the course?

The course is spread over four days. It starts every day at 9 am and finishes at 5.30 pm. We will aim to finish at 5pm on Day 4.

How many participants can you have on any one course?

There is a maximum of six new participants to ensure the quality is not compromised by bigger numbers. There may be previous students coming back for some or all of the course to refresh their memory.

Who is the course for?

Anyone who is interested in baby-carrying and intends on teaching it. If you already have some carrying experience, it has potential to really benefit you, but it is important to be able to open yourself to new ideas and be willing to break some habits you may have. You will also have to get past your previous experiences to learn new skills. If you are very new to baby-carrying this course covers basic knowledge as well as advanced knowledge. The course is built in such a way that each time you attend you might pick up new things, so we look forward to welcoming you back several times. There are also handouts and videos available to be used as refreshers if need be.

Do I need to do anything before the course?

The more you prepare, the more you will get out of the course. We will ask you to have read the Slingababy website and watched some videos. The links to these will be given prior to the course.

Do I need to bring anything?

A pen! All other equipment will be available (slings and demo dolls) unless there is prior arrangement with the individuals or group to provide some equipment to reduce transport costs. Feel free to bring any slings you have, especially the ones you are not familiar with. You are welcome to record anything you wish to, as long as it is only for your personal use.

Do I need to do anything after the course?

At the end of the course you will receive a Certificate of Attendance with which you can register with Babywearing Educators NZ to receive professional indemnity insurance and begin working as a Baby Carrier Consultant, should you wish to.

To receive a Certificate of Completion you will be asked to do a project of your choice to benefit the baby-carrying community. It can be an article, a video, an audio document, a compilation of documents, whichever format suits you. I will also ask you to get feedback from your customers to be passed onto me, for us to discuss and to check how we can improve. Positive feedback will be passed onto you. The project and positive client feedback comprise the final component of the course to receive the final certificate.

Can I bring my baby/toddler?

It is up to you, providing he/she is healthy (meaning no chicken pox for instance!). The course is quite intense, so to get the most out of it, you might prefer to be able to focus without having to look after a little one. You can bring another adult to help out or we can try and organise some childcare. If you decide that it is best for you to come with your little one, I will ask you to make sure he/she does not disturb the other participants’ learning. Remember that you can come as many times as you need, so if you do miss some parts of the course, you will be able to come again!

Will I get a certificate of attendance?

Yes you will, and this is sufficient to provide everything you need to get qualified & established as a Baby Carrying Consultant. In addition, after completion of an optional little project and receipt of the feedback from your customers (as detailed above), you will receive a certificate of completion for the training.

Will I be able to teach straight after the course?

This is the aim! The reason why the course is spread over four days is to give you a chance to take in new skills as well as the new teaching methods. It is one thing to know how to do something yourself, it is another to know how to teach this skill to others. It usually takes a few days to arrange insurance (further details at the course).

Will I be free to teach the way I want or am I expected to do it in a specific way?

There is a big section of the course about the ethics behind being a consultant. The philosophy behind Slingababy NZ Training School is about empowering the parents. We will also share some valuable teaching methods with you, however, it is your choice whether you choose to use them or not.
